Please wear athletic shoes and comfortable workout clothes you can move a lot in! Please wear your hair up and out of the way and no jewelry. On the day of the actual tryout, you will wear any black shorts and a plain white t-shirt (this can be any t-shirt turned inside out if necessary. Don’t buy new clothes for tryouts!)
What will I learn during the tryout clinics?
We will teach you jumps, motions, a dance routine, a cheer, and a chant.
Do I have to know how to cheer to tryout?
Absolutely not! We welcome applicants of all skill levels to come tryout. If you are brand new to cheer, a simple search of “cheer jumps” or “cheer motions” will offer numerous resources for you to practice at home before tryouts begin.
Do I have to tumble to make the team?
Any tumbling skills are welcomed and will add bonus points to your tryout scores, but are not necessary to make the team!
How do I know if I’ve made the team?
We will post a list of the members in each new squad on the front doors of Bellevue West on the night of tryouts.
Will I be able to see my scores after?
We will not disclose scores or any tryout information once tryouts conclude. Coaches, judges and Principals will not be able to discuss tryouts with applicants who made a team or who did not make a team.
Are there fundraising opportunities available to help with the costs?
Yes, we have several opportunities to fundraise at all points in the year.
Do we compete?
Varsity competes locally, regionally and nationally throughout the year. They compete at least 5 times a season. The Junior Varsity squad is competitive as well taking their routine to locally showcases and competitions 3-4 times.
How do the Competition Teams work?
Both JV/Varsity competition teams will be announced in July. There will be spots for alternates and spots for competition members. Being an alternate on the competition team is a very important role. Throughout the season if a cheerleader gets injured, we have to have an alternate step in and perform in their place. Alternates must be skilled to learn several different parts of the routine and therefore must be very talented. Alternates will still pay the same fees as they are members of the competition team and they may have to step in at any moment (including right before a competition).
Can I just do Gameday Cheer and not Competition Cheer?
Unfortunately, no. Bellevue West Cheerleading is both Competition Cheer and Gameday Cheer. We currently do not have separate teams for each.
